The federal and Saskatchewan governments announced $6.9 million in joint funding to support 30 livestock and forage-related research projects in the province, with total funding reaching $7.2 million after contributions from industry partners. The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s AssociationSaskatchewan Forage Seed Development CommissionSaskPork, and the Western Dairy Research Coalition funded 10 projects focusing on animal health and forage production. This funding is part of the province’s $37 million agriculture research budget for 2024-25 under the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) and Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP).
Projects cover diverse topics, including pathogen research, vaccine development, and rangeland management. The University of Saskatchewan leads with 21 projects, followed by contributions from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and other institutions. Federal and provincial agriculture ministers emphasized the importance of innovation to maintain Saskatchewan’s leadership in agriculture. This announcement follows recent funding for 53 crop research projects under the same programs.
