In 2018, Brookfield Zoo Chicago veterinarians performed the first-ever CT scan on Layla, a 2,300-pound black rhinoceros, to investigate a nasal obstruction. However, they faced challenges in interpreting the results due to a lack of reference images for healthy rhinoceroses. This led to the creation of the Zoo and Aquarium Radiology Database, launched in 2024. Funded by a $690,000 federal grant, this online resource offers veterinarians access to diagnostic images like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans for various zoo animals.

With over 1,000 images from 50 species, the database aims to grow to 10,000 images within two years. It allows professionals to search by species, age, and body part, streamlining diagnostics for exotic animals and advancing veterinary care. The database also serves as a teaching tool for aspiring veterinarians. Layla, the rhino that inspired this project, is now healthy and thriving at the zoo.
