Nibi, a two-year-old beaver rescued as a baby in Massachusetts, sparked a debate over whether she was ready for release into the wild. Found abandoned and raised by Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, Nibi became a local favorite due to her mischievous nature. Despite her age, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife believed it was time for her to leave the rescue. However, the rescue center argued that Nibi was not prepared for survival, citing risks of starvation and hypothermia if released before winter.

A petition to keep Nibi at the center gained 29,000 signatures. Ultimately, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey intervened, issuing a permit for Nibi to stay at the rescue as an educational beaver. Newhouse Wildlife Rescue celebrated the decision, emphasizing that their goal was to protect Nibi, not make her a pet. They plan to continue preparing Nibi for possible future release into the wild.
