Boehringer Ingelheim has opened an expanded research and development facility in Athens, Georgia, enhancing its commitment to animal health with a $66.1 million investment and creating 63 new jobs. The 91,000-square-foot facility includes substantial administrative and laboratory space, supporting Boehringer’s position as Georgia’s largest Animal Health company. This site will foster innovations in animal health, including vaccines for pets, poultry, and wildlife, and is now Boehringer’s largest U.S. R&D facility and third-largest globally.
The expansion supports Georgia’s life sciences ecosystem, leveraging proximity to the USDA’s National Poultry Research Center and the University of Georgia. Community partnerships, like with Athens’ Career Academy, aim to build a biomanufacturing talent pipeline. Georgia’s Department of Agriculture and Boehringer leaders highlighted the facility’s role in strengthening animal health research and local job growth. The project was supported by local organizations like Invest Athens and the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
