Scientists have discovered a new species of mining bee, Andrena androfovea, in Texas and Oklahoma, marking a significant breakthrough in bee biodiversity research. Published in Ecology and Evolution, the study reveals that this species, unique for its “sparkly blue” color, is the first Andrena bee to exhibit an affinity for plants in the tomato family. Researchers observed its unusual behavior of using its hairy abdomen and legs to gather pollen while performing a “handstand” on flowers.

Genetic analysis shows Andrena androfovea is not closely related to any of the 1,500+ known species in the Andrena genus, forming its own branch of the family tree that diverged around 12.6 million years ago. This rarity, along with its distinctive traits and evolutionary innovations, led to the creation of a new subgenus. The discovery highlights the ongoing potential for uncovering new species in the vast world of bees.
