The Greeley Police Department has reported an increase in daytime raccoon sightings, often a sign of Distemper, a viral disease similar to rabies. The disease affects raccoons’ stomachs, lungs, and brains and poses a serious threat to pets, potentially fatal to dogs. The department clarified that animal control officers handle only domesticated animals, urging citizens to contact wildlife removal experts for assistance.
Wildlife specialist Eric Brady recently encountered four raccoons with suspected Distemper in West Greeley. Symptoms include abnormal behavior, weakness, and crusted eyes. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) confirmed similar cases in Fort Collins and other state regions, raising concerns among pet owners. The Greeley Police Department’s Facebook page offers resources for finding wildlife removal experts.
