The Holstein Association USA has updated its linear stature scale for Holstein cows, reflecting modern trends in dairy genetics and farming practices. Effective December 1, 2024, the revised scale now measures from 55 to 65 inches, replacing the previous 51 to 61-inch range. This change, based on Dr. Jeffrey Bewley’s 2023 research, addresses the increasing height of Holstein cows due to selective breeding and improved nutrition.
Each inch now equals a five-point increment, ensuring scores align with the actual size distribution of today’s Holsteins. This recalibration enhances data accuracy for genetic and conformation analyses, enabling better herd management and marketability. The adjustment, recommended by the Conformation Advisory Committee and approved by the Holstein Association USA Board, emphasizes balancing stature with health and productivity. This strategic shift empowers farmers to optimize breeding and herd strategies, aligning tradition with innovation for improved profitability and animal welfare.
