The Coalition for Veterinary Professional Associates (CVPA) highlights a critical shortage of Veterinary professionals in the U.S., threatening animal welfare, public health, and the human-animal bond. During a December 2024 meeting in Orlando, keynote speaker Dr. Michael J. Blackwell emphasized the OneHealth initiative and the need to address barriers to Veterinary care. Key issues include financial constraints, access challenges, and a severe provider shortfall—only 37 veterinarians per 100,000 pets compared to 252 physicians for humans.

Animal shelters and Access-to-Care Clinics face significant staff shortages, leading to delays in vital procedures like spaying and neutering. This crisis affects public health, contributes to overcrowded shelters, and stresses families and professionals. To address these challenges, the CVPA proposes introducing Veterinary Professional Associates (VPAs), akin to nurse practitioners, to perform routine procedures and expand care access. The CVPA urges policymakers and veterinarians to support innovative solutions ensuring equitable Veterinary care nationwide.
