Bruce, a 21-month-old golden retriever, made his MLB debut Saturday at Nationals Park during the Washington Nationals’ “Pups in the Park” event. Known for retrieving bats for the Rochester Red Wings, the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate, Bruce charmed fans by fetching a bat during a pregame ceremony before the Nationals’ 4-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. Wearing a special “MLB debut” bandana, Bruce was presented with a commemorative bat and delighted the crowd with his enthusiastic performance.
His owner, Josh Snyder, who drove overnight to Washington, praised Bruce’s fun-loving personality and called him the perfect representative for both Rochester and the Nationals. Though Bruce didn’t work during the game, he spent time on the field meeting fans and doing practice runs. Bruce is also part of a charitable effort that honors veterans, following in the pawprints of Snyder’s previous bat dog, Milo. His appearance generated significant attention, especially on social media.
