Afi, a six-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix, is recovering after ingesting a potentially lethal amount of xylitol, a sugar substitute commonly found in gum, baked goods, and other household items. Afi consumed approximately 35 pieces of xylitol-sweetened gum, totaling an estimated 35,000 mg of the toxic substance. Xylitol, though safe for humans, can cause a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar and severe liver damage in dogs.
Afi’s owners rushed him to DoveLewis Animal Hospital in Portland after he began vomiting and refused food. He was in critical condition upon arrival but stabilized after two days of intensive treatment. Veterinarians emphasize that even one piece of xylitol-containing gum can harm pets and urge immediate medical attention if ingestion is suspected. Xylitol may be listed under alternative names like “sugar alcohol” or “birch sugar,” so pet owners are advised to store such products securely to prevent accidental poisoning.
