Utah State University (USU) is launching the state’s first four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program in August 2025, addressing a statewide shortage of veterinarians, especially in rural and agricultural areas. The inaugural class includes 42 students, 27 of whom are Utah residents, selected from over 300 applicants. Previously, USU partnered with Washington State University in a “2+2” program, but a new state-funded Veterinary Medical Education building and curriculum now enable USU to host a full in-state program.
Dean Dirk Vanderwall highlighted the integrated, systems-based curriculum, which combines disciplines like anatomy and physiology and incorporates artificial intelligence. Students will also gain real-world experience through clinical placements in local Veterinary practices. The program aims to serve all sectors of animal care—from pets to livestock—while supporting Utah’s growing demand for Veterinary professionals. The initiative aligns with state goals to match higher education with workforce needs and boost access to Veterinary services across Utah.
