Illinois has passed a new law to provide long-term Veterinary care for retired police dogs, recognizing their service and ongoing needs. House Bill 3140, signed into law and effective January 1, 2026, establishes the Police K-9 Care Program and Police K-9 Care Fund. Championed by State Senator Napoleon Harris III, the measure ensures that K-9 officers, who dedicate their lives to protecting communities, receive proper medical support after retirement.
Initiated by the Illinois State Police Command Officers Association, the program reflects a commitment to treating these animals with the same respect as human first responders. Harris emphasized that police dogs are held to high standards during service and deserve lasting care afterward. The law also places Illinois among a growing list of states recognizing the responsibility to support retired service animals, highlighting their contributions to public safety and the value of ensuring their well-being in retirement.
