New Jersey has officially opened its first Veterinary school, the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine at Rowan University, ending the need for aspiring vets to leave the state for training. The inaugural class of 75 students—over half from New Jersey—will begin a four-year program, with in-state tuition set at $37,500 per year and out-of-state at $58,500, plus additional living costs.
Funded by a $75 million state investment and a $30 million donation from Gerald B. Shreiber, the school addresses both high student debt and the national veterinarian shortage, projected to reach 15,000 by next year. Its 100,000-square-foot Harrison Township facility, opening in October, will provide pet care services to the public while offering students rotations in specialties such as surgery, emergency, dentistry, and exotic animal care. With partnerships with over 60 organizations, the school aims to strengthen local Veterinary services and improve access to animal care in South Jersey.
