Texas A&M University’s newly renamed Center for Insect Biomanufacturing and Innovation (CIBI) marks a major evolution in the university’s partnership with the National Science Foundation’s IUCRC program, emphasizing deeper industry collaboration and broader research goals. Formerly the Center for Environmental Sustainability through Insect Farming, CIBI now focuses on transforming insect science into scalable, industry-driven biomanufacturing solutions.
Led by Dr. Jeffery Tomberlin, the center’s mission extends beyond insect farming to creating circular food systems, converting waste into valuable protein, and advancing sustainable agriculture. Operating as a three-site network with Indiana University-Indianapolis and Mississippi State University, CIBI integrates fields like microbiology, engineering, and nutrition to develop innovations that reduce reliance on traditional protein sources. Through strong partnerships with industry and academia, CIBI aims to deliver translational, real-world impacts in food production, waste remediation, and the agricultural bioeconomy—driving sustainable growth and innovation across multiple sectors.
