Arkansas State University has received a $600,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to lead a multi-zoo study on reptile immune systems. Partnering with nine zoos nationwide, including the Memphis and Little Rock zoos, the project aims to fill major gaps in reptile immunology, an area with limited existing research. Associate physiology professor Dr. Lori Neuman-Lee said the study will help establish foundational immune standards for reptiles, paving the way for improved Veterinary care, new therapies, and stronger conservation efforts.
Better understanding reptile diseases and clinical symptoms could also benefit pet owners and the exotic animal trade. The grant will support three years of research and provide hands-on opportunities for Arkansas State students pursuing medical, Veterinary, and graduate studies. Neuman-Lee expects the work to continue beyond the grant period, adding that the project may uncover previously unknown reptile diseases and offer new approaches to treatment.
