Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) may soon resume adult dog adoptions after reporting no new cases of canine parvovirus since last week. The shelter announced that five dogs had contracted the highly contagious virus since Dec. 10, four of which were euthanized due to severe symptoms. In response, SCRAPS paused adult dog adoptions and nonemergency intakes for two weeks, enhanced cleaning protocols, and restricted staff access to dog housing areas to prevent further spread.
Parvovirus attacks a dog’s intestinal tract and can be fatal, spreading easily through contact with infected dogs or contaminated surfaces. Shelter officials say operations could return to normal next week if dogs remain healthy. Cat and puppy adoptions have continued throughout the closure because puppies are housed separately and were not exposed. SCRAPS Director Ronnie Schlabs emphasized vaccination as the best defense, noting there is no cure for the virus and treatment focuses on supportive care.
