The American Kennel Club officially recognized three new dog breeds on January 1, 2026: the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, and the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier, bringing the total number of AKC-recognized breeds to 205. With full recognition, the breeds may compete in AKC conformation and performance events.
Though newly admitted, none are newly created. The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a small, affectionate toy breed from Russia, prized for companionship. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is an ancient French scent hound developed for hunting on foot, known for stamina, intelligence, and a friendly temperament. The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is a distinctly American breed, closely related to the Rat Terrier, valued for alertness, versatility, and strong hunting instincts. Achieving AKC recognition requires years of effort, including breed standards, pedigree documentation, and nationwide representation. These additions highlight the diversity and enduring appeal of purpose-bred dogs.
