The Council on Postsecondary Education has approved a new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at Murray State University, marking a major milestone for higher education in Kentucky. Once accredited, the program would become the first Veterinary school offered at a Kentucky public university. The next step involves Murray State seeking provisional accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education. If approval is granted, the university could admit its first class of Veterinary students as early as fall 2028.
University leaders praised the decision, highlighting broad support from state leaders, faculty, and governing boards. The program was made possible after the Kentucky General Assembly passed Senate Bill 77, allowing certain public universities to offer doctoral degrees if specific benchmarks are met. State officials say the program will help address Kentucky’s veterinarian shortage, noting that far fewer applicants are admitted to Veterinary programs than apply each year.
