Tuskegee University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) is celebrating the birth of Coco Chanel, a foal born Feb. 1, the first on campus in many years. Her mother, Dolly, was surrendered by a local resident five years ago and later adopted by the Large Animal Farm/Barn manager. Dolly’s pregnancy was confirmed in 2025, giving veterinary students hands-on learning opportunities as they performed ultrasounds every other month and monitored her through delivery. Dean Dr. Ebony Gilbreath called the birth a story of “joy and rebirth,” highlighting the educational value of involving students in prenatal and neonatal care.
TUCVM trains future veterinarians while operating Small and Large Animal Teaching Hospitals that provide wellness exams, diagnostics, surgery, specialty services, ambulatory large animal care, and emergency treatment. Serving the community for more than 80 years, TUCVM is the first Veterinary medical program at a historically Black college or university and has educated over 70% of the nation’s African-American veterinarians.
