Veterinary visits are often highly stressful for cats because they involve leaving their familiar home environment, being confined in a carrier, encountering unfamiliar sights and smells, and being handled by strangers. This stress can lead some owners to delay necessary Veterinary care, even though regular checkups are essential. Experts recommend preparing cats through carrier training, which helps them associate the carrier with safety rather than fear. Keeping the carrier visible at home, adding comfortable bedding, and gradually introducing treats near and inside it can help cats feel more comfortable.
During transport, the carrier should be held securely and moved smoothly to reduce anxiety. At the clinic, cats should remain in the carrier until the veterinarian is ready and be allowed to exit voluntarily. Owners should communicate with Veterinary staff about their cat’s anxiety, as medication may sometimes help. Pain, especially in older cats with conditions like osteoarthritis, can also increase stress. With preparation and teamwork, Veterinary visits can become calmer and more manageable for cats.
