A £20 million anonymous donation has funded a new state-of-the-art animal hospital at London Zoo, allowing visitors to observe live veterinary procedures for the first time in the UK.  The Wildlife Health Centre, developed by the Zoological Society of London, will combine advanced animal care, scientific research, training, and public engagement. Visitors may watch routine health checks as well as more complex procedures, including surgeries and post-mortems.
ZSL says the facility will support conservation efforts, study disease transmission between animals and humans, and serve as a global training hub for wildlife veterinarians.  The initiative comes as the organization marks its 200th anniversary and seeks to highlight its role in conservation and education.
However, critics, including the Born Free Foundation, argue the project does not address ethical concerns about keeping animals in captivity and risks turning medical care into public spectacle.
