Extreme drought conditions in Central Virginia are affecting local wildlife and stray animals, according to experts from the Wildlife Center of Virginia and the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. Wildlife may conserve energy by reducing activity during the hottest parts of the day and traveling farther in search of water. Stray and community cats may also need additional hydration support.
Officials encourage residents who encounter stray animals to bring them to shelters for care and to provide clean water sources outdoors, such as shallow baths or bowls, to help wildlife stay hydrated. Experts also advise leaving natural debris like logs and leaf piles intact because they can provide shelter, cooling areas, and moisture for small animals. Despite the drought, most local wildlife species are generally well adapted to survive these harsh conditions, and animals appearing distressed may be suffering from issues unrelated to drought alone.
