Researchers at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are partnering with Antech Diagnostics to combat the growing threat of drug-resistant parasites in pets and livestock. Supported by a $1.6 million NSERC Alliance Grant, the project aims to move Veterinary medicine away from routine deworming and toward diagnostic-driven, precision treatment. Scientists are using advanced genomic sequencing to identify genetic markers linked to parasite drug resistance, allowing veterinarians to determine which medications are most effective before treatment begins.
Researchers say overuse of anti-parasitic drugs has accelerated resistance and may also harm ecosystems through environmental contamination. The collaboration builds on Antech’s existing molecular diagnostic testing platforms, including parasite PCR testing already used millions of times in companion animals. The initiative supports a broader One Health approach by improving animal care, slowing resistance development, and promoting more sustainable Veterinary practices.
