The Tulsa Zoo is facing a $15 million funding shortfall that threatens completion of its Africa Wilds exhibit, a major project scheduled to open in 2027 during the zoo’s centennial celebration. Originally estimated at $12 million when first conceived 14 years ago, the project’s cost has risen dramatically to $47 million because of increasing construction expenses. The zoo currently has $32 million available, leaving a significant gap that could force construction to stop if additional funding is not secured.
Zoo CEO Lindsay Hutchison warned that halting construction would increase future costs due to demobilization and rebidding. During a May 13 city council meeting, Hutchison urged city leaders to help fund the project, emphasizing its value for tourism, education, and community engagement. The zoo continues seeking private donations while construction disrupts some visitor access throughout the facility.
