Woods Humane Society has partnered with the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program to strengthen animal care services and improve outcomes for pets in San Luis Obispo County. The collaboration aims to help address challenges affecting shelters statewide, including Veterinary staffing shortages, delays in spay/neuter services, and rising demand for pet care support.
Through the partnership, UC Davis veterinarians will help Woods Humane Society improve medical protocols, reduce shelter stress and disease risk, identify operational bottlenecks, and expand care capacity. The organizations also plan to explore partnerships that can provide earlier support for pets and owners before animals enter crisis situations.
Woods Humane Society highlighted the successful recovery of a kitten named Hippo, who survived a serious viral illness thanks to rapid diagnosis, foster care, and coordinated medical support. Leaders say the partnership will help create more success stories like Hippo’s while allowing the shelter to place animals into homes more quickly and efficiently.
