Scientists have identified a new species of highly venomous box jellyfish near Singapore after analyzing specimens collected in 2020 and 2021. The species, named Chironex blakangmati, was named after Sentosa Island’s former Malay name, “Pulau Blakang Mati,” meaning “Island of Death Behind.” Researchers determined the jellyfish was genetically and anatomically distinct from the closely related Chironex yamaguchii.
Unlike many jellyfish, Chironex species actively hunt prey using strong swimming abilities and complex eyes. Their venomous stings can be fatal to humans. Scientists discovered the new species lacks specific branched canal structures found in other Chironex jellyfish species. The study also revealed that the deadly Thai sea wasp, Chironex indrasaksajiae, has expanded its known range into Singapore waters for the first time. Researchers say understanding the distribution and biodiversity of box jellyfish is important for improving public safety, as box jellyfish stings are believed to cause dozens of deaths worldwide each year.
