Iowa State University and Freshpet have launched a 10-month at-home research study examining how dog diets may influence canine health and the human-animal bond. Led by Logan Kilburn, assistant professor in animal science at Iowa State, the study involves 39 dogs of various breeds and ages from central Iowa. Participating owners follow assigned feeding protocols while collecting non-invasive health samples and completing surveys about their relationships with their pets.
Researchers are combining owner-reported feedback with objective health measurements, including heart rate monitoring, to better understand how nutrition affects both physical well-being and emotional connections between dogs and owners. Kilburn noted that conducting the study in home environments provides more realistic insights into how nutrition impacts everyday life and pet relationships. Freshpet officials said the partnership reflects the company’s belief that nutrition plays an important role in pets’ health and family relationships. Findings may benefit pet owners, veterinarians, and the pet food industry.
