Catherine Harris, DVM, has been named South Carolina’s new deputy state veterinarian by Clemson Livestock Poultry Health. Harris brings extensive experience in both animal agriculture and regulatory medicine, most recently serving as assistant state veterinarian and director of livestock animal health programs for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. In that role, she oversaw infectious disease surveillance, emergency response, animal disease traceability, and livestock movement regulations.
Prior to her government service, Harris spent a decade in integrated swine production medicine with Smithfield Hog Production and Smithfield Premium Genetics and also worked in dairy-exclusive private practice. She believes this combination of industry and regulatory experience helps her build trust with producers and communicate the importance of disease surveillance, testing, quarantines, and movement restrictions.
Clemson Livestock Poultry Health officials cited her leadership during responses to highly pathogenic avian influenza, African swine fever preparedness efforts, and hurricane emergencies. Harris also highlighted opportunities for collaboration with Clemson Extension and the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine to strengthen South Carolina’s animal agriculture industry.
