Beginning July 1, 2026Minnesota implemented new laws establishing updated standards for licensed Veterinary technicians. Under the legislation, Veterinary technicians must complete 16 hours of continuing education during each licensing period to maintain their credentials. The law also strengthens the authority of the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine, allowing it to suspend or revoke licenses when appropriate.
In addition, Veterinary technicians are now required to provide medical records to an animal’s owner or the Board upon request and must adhere to prevailing humane treatment and animal care standards established by the Board. The new requirements are intended to promote professional accountability, support continuing education, improve transparency in medical record access, and help ensure consistent standards of care for animals treated throughout the state.
