In this heartfelt tribute, Jenny Johnston honors her veterinarian as her true Valentine: someone who shows up in a red truck, rain or shine, day or night, to care for her family’s horses. Over a year marked by emergencies and heartbreak, the vet tirelessly treated injured foals, including an orphan who could not be saved and another with a broken femur who survived against the odds. She responded even while ill to save a barrel horse with a severed artery and consistently offered compassion, reassurance and friendship beyond medical care.
Johnston highlights the emotional and financial challenges of horse ownership and the extraordinary dedication of large animal veterinarians. With only 3.4% of vets practicing equine medicine and a nationwide shortage (especially acute in rural Colorado), these professionals face exhaustion and overwhelming demand, particularly during foaling season. Johnston calls for greater community support and youth engagement in Veterinary medicine to sustain the future of this essential, heartfelt profession.
