Ancestry, known for its consumer DNA testing and genealogy services, has introduced “Know Your Pet DNA.” This dog DNA test is designed to provide pet owners with a deeper understanding of their pets, including breed breakdowns, genetic matches with other dogs, and information on 30 behavioral and physical traits. The test involves registering it on the Ancestry website, swabbing the dog’s cheek, and returning the sample in a provided prepaid box. Scientists then use Thermo Fisher Scientific’s DNA microarray technology to analyze the genetic blueprint and compare it to a vast database, providing information on the dog’s lineage, traits, and kinship connections within 2 to 4 weeks.
Approximately 62% of U.S. households have pets, and Ancestry aims to cater to pet owners who consider their animals as integral family members. The introductory price for the “Know Your Pet DNA” kit is $75 until September 30, 2023, after which it will be $99.
