Bird flu has been found in raw pet food, with cases reported in cats across multiple states, including California and Oregon. Affected products include Monarch Raw Pet Food and Northwest Naturals, with the latter recalling turkey-based food linked to a cat’s death. Cats, especially those fed raw diets or exposed to infected wildlife, are highly susceptible to bird flu, which can lead to rapid fatal illness, often within 24 hours of symptoms appearing.
The FDA and veterinarians warn against feeding pets raw foods, as they may harbor viruses and bacteria. Symptoms in cats include coughing, sneezing, neurological issues, and severe lethargy. Most infected cats show rapid deterioration, with 67% mortality in known cases. Experts recommend avoiding raw diets, keeping cats indoors, and minimizing exposure to wild birds. Prompt Veterinary care is essential if symptoms arise, though prevention remains the best approach to safeguarding feline health.
