The shrimp-farming industry’s success hinges on greater inter-industry collaboration to meet rising consumer demands for traceability, sustainability, and animal welfare, according to a panel at the AquaExpo conference in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The panel highlighted the importance of integrating technology, sustainability, and international cooperation to shape the industry’s future.

A notable example is the alliance between Dutch retailer Albert Heijn, shrimp importer Klaas Puul, Ecuadorian shrimp farmer Cofimar, feed producer Skretting, and MSD Animal Health. This partnership addresses supermarket demands for transparent practices, including complete traceability and humane treatment, such as eliminating eyestalk ablation. MSD Animal Health employs advanced DNA traceability to ensure ablation-free practices. By analyzing shrimp heads at their laboratories, scientists confirm the presence of both eyes and create a DNA archive to verify compliance. This alliance demonstrates how innovative methods and collaborative efforts can align with consumer expectations for ethical and sustainable shrimp farming.
