At the 750-mile Yukon Quest sled dog race, a team of 11 Veterinary professionals works behind the scenes to keep canine athletes healthy across Alaska’s frozen wilderness. Led by head veterinarian Mercedes Pinto, the team includes nine veterinarians and two senior students who staff checkpoints along two race routes. Their biggest challenge is logistical—ensuring at least one vet is present at every checkpoint from the first musher’s arrival to the last departure.
While race rules require proper rest, nutrition and protective booties, the Veterinary team focuses on medical care and performance monitoring. Most issues are minor, such as gastrointestinal upset or muscle strains, but vets are prepared for emergencies including torn ligaments, swallowed booties and severe allergic reactions. Mandatory “nose to tail” exams at rest stops assess heart and lung sounds, hydration and lameness, with portable EKG machines available for cardiac concerns. The team ensures elite dogs compete safely in extreme conditions.
