A bill allowing Murray State University (MSU) to pursue a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine is now on the Governor’s desk for approval. Senate Bill 77, which has been in the works for several legislative sessions, will enable MSU to work with accrediting bodies and the Council on Postsecondary Education to establish Kentucky’s first vet school.
While many support the initiative, the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA) has raised concerns over MSU’s proposed distributive model, where students gain field experience in local clinics rather than a traditional teaching hospital. KVMA argues that this approach could strain local veterinarians, reduce educational consistency, and lead to burnout for both students and vets.
Despite opposition, MSU sees the program as a valuable opportunity to expand Veterinary education in western Kentucky. KVMA, however, stands by its concerns, stating that the model could impact private practices and the quality of training for future veterinarians.
