The Securing American Agriculture Act, a bipartisan bill, has been introduced in the U.S. House and Senate to ensure the USDA monitors vulnerabilities in the food and agriculture supply chain that could be exploited by China. Sponsored by Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA), Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE), and Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), the bill seeks to protect U.S. access to essential agricultural inputs.
China currently controls over 90% of key vitamins used in animal feed and dominates 85% of global production of certain amino acids, creating a potential food security risk if supply chains are disrupted. The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) supports the bill, emphasizing the need for data-driven policy decisions to diversify suppliers and boost domestic production. The legislation mandates annual USDA assessments of supply chain vulnerabilities and requires the Secretary of Agriculture to recommend actions to reduce dependence on China and mitigate risks.
