Los Angeles County health officials have issued a warning against feeding pets raw food following the recall of Northwest Naturals Brand Feline Turkey Recipe Raw & Frozen Pet Food due to the detection of H5 bird flu. The affected products are sold in 2-pound bags with specific “Best if used by” dates. A house cat in Oregon died after consuming the recalled food, and four cats in California, who consumed raw milk, also succumbed to bird flu. Investigations into additional cases are ongoing, with some linked to raw meat consumption.
Bird flu in cats can cause severe respiratory, neurological, or liver issues, often leading to rapid death. Pet owners noticing symptoms in their pets after consuming raw products are urged to contact veterinarians immediately. Officials recommend avoiding all raw meat and dairy for pets and people, emphasizing that these products can harbor harmful pathogens. The public risk of H5 bird flu remains low, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission.
