New York City’s iconic “bodega cats” are beloved by locals and visitors alike, but technically violate state health laws prohibiting animals in food-selling establishments. Despite this, many bodegas keep cats to deter pests like rodents and cockroaches, and customers often adore them. A recent petition advocating protection for bodega cat owners from fines gained over 10,000 signatures. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which enforces food safety laws, says it prioritizes education and corrective actions before issuing fines.
For many, these cats serve a deeper purpose, building community and customer connections. In Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a cat named Mimi became a local celebrity after a TikTok video went viral, building a bond between her owner, a Yemeni immigrant, and the video’s creator. Mimi’s kittens, like Lily and Lionel, now reside in nearby bodegas and continue to charm customers. These feline fixtures have become symbols of New York’s unique neighborhood spirit.
