New research from Waltham Petcare Science Institute reveals the role of oxytocin, the “love hormone,” in interactions between children and dogs. The study shows that both children and dogs experience increased oxytocin levels when playing together, whether the dog is a pet or a therapy dog. This is one of the first studies to demonstrate mutual benefits for both children and dogs, as dogs also release more oxytocin when interacting with familiar children.

Oxytocin is linked to reduced stress and anxiety, and feelings of trust and wellbeing. The research underscores the positive role dogs play in children’s social and emotional development, highlighting the importance of the human-animal bond. Mars Petcare continues its mission to promote a better world for pets through such studies.
