The Buffalo Zoo is set to receive $53,000 in state funding to assist its education and animal departments, including animal care and husbandry programs. The zoo, which relies heavily on self-generated revenue from entrance fees, faced financial challenges due to reduced attendance during the pandemic and unfavorable weather conditions over the past year.

Buffalo Zoo President/CEO Lisa S. Smith explained that operational funding was crucial to maintain animal operations, improve husbandry, support food and enrichment programs, and ensure Veterinary care, in addition to sustaining education initiatives. Lawmakers praised the funding, recognizing the zoo’s significance as a cultural institution and tourist attraction in Buffalo. Assemblyman Bill Conrad expressed his enthusiasm for supporting the zoo’s work in zoology and conservation education.
