Canada has approved gene-edited pigs resistant to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), a costly virus affecting swine health and pork production. Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency concluded that pork from these pigs is as safe and nutritious as conventional pork and that the animals are safe for livestock feed. Developed by Genus PLC and PIC Canada, the pigs are designed to improve animal welfare, reduce antibiotic use and lower environmental impacts.
Research shows PRRS more than doubles antibiotic needs in infected herds. The U.S. FDA approved the gene edit in 2025, and several Latin American countries have issued positive determinations, recognizing the pigs as non-GMO. Despite Canadian approval, Genus does not plan to sell the pigs until additional regulatory clearances are secured in key markets. Meanwhile, Canada is reviewing labeling standards for genetically engineered foods. A 2025 survey found 90% of Canadian consumers are open to buying pork from gene-edited pigs.
