A new CATalyst Council survey of over 60,000 U.S. households reveals a major untapped opportunity in feline Veterinary care. With an estimated 76 million cats in the U.S. and 90 percent of owners reporting a strong emotional bond, demand exists but remains underutilized. Only about one in three cats receives annual Veterinary care, compared to seven in ten dogs, creating a $34 billion gap in potential revenue, with just $12.7 billion currently captured.
The study shows feline visits have grown 2 percent over three years, while dog visits declined 8 percent, making cats a key growth driver. Owners cite clear motivators for increased visits, including belief that care extends life, lower costs, convenience, and reduced stress. A major barrier is owner overconfidence in recognizing illness, despite cats often hiding symptoms. The findings suggest Veterinary practices can significantly increase revenue by improving communication, emphasizing preventive care, and reducing visit barriers.
