The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially ended its emergency response to the H5N1 bird flu outbreak due to a significant decline in animal cases and no new human infections since February 2025. The CDC declared the emergency in April 2024 after the virus spread across birds, mammals, and dairy cattle, affecting over 1,000 herds in 17 states and nearly 175 million birds nationwide.
Though 70 human cases and one death were reported in total, recent declines in infections prompted a transition back to standard influenza monitoring under the CDC’s influenza division. Dr. Nirav Shah emphasized that the response could be quickly reactivated if needed. Experts warn bird flu is seasonal and may resurge in fall or winter, but current public health risks remain low. The CDC will continue surveillance to detect any new outbreaks and respond accordingly, ensuring ongoing protection without maintaining emergency-level operations.
