A hound dog named Twiggy is recovering after veterinarians at the Charleston Animal Society discovered and removed three-foot-long kidney worms during a spay-neuter surgery. Twiggy, found on Johns Island, was suffering from Dioctophyme renale, or giant kidney worms, typically found in mustelids like minks.

Senior Veterinarian Dr. Margie Morris was shocked to find six of these worms during the routine procedure. Twiggy is now healing in an indoor-outdoor pen and is expected to find a loving home soon. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Lucy Fuller plans to write a case study about this rare occurrence for a scientific journal.
