The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its annual Pesticide Residue Monitoring Program Report for Fiscal Year 2022, covering the period from October 2021 to September 2022. The report summarizes findings from FDA testing of human and animal foods for 757 pesticides and selected industrial compounds. The results show that pesticide residue levels in the U.S. food supply generally comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.
In FY 2022, 96.2% of domestic and 89.5% of imported human food samples met federal regulations, while 95.6% of domestic and 100% of imported animal food samples were compliant. The report notes that 42.7% of domestic and 44.6% of imported human food samples had no detectable pesticide residues. The FDA’s risk-based approach targeted imported foods more likely to contain violative residues. Sample collection in FY 2022, affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, was lower than in FY 2019 but higher than in FY 2020 and FY 2021.
