DeKalb County, Georgia, has launched an innovative “pet neighborhood” project to alleviate severe overcrowding at its animal shelter. The facility, designed for 230 dogs with a maximum capacity of 400, is currently housing over 600 dogs, with an additional 700 in foster care. The new project will consist of 10 prefabricated buildings, each accommodating 12 dogs in temperature-controlled personal spaces, reducing the shelter’s load by 120 dogs.

Funded with $4.1 million from SPLOST II and county general funds, the first five units are expected to be operational by March 2024, with the remaining by June. Located next to the current shelter, the village-style setup will feature sidewalks for a healthier, more manageable environment. Officials emphasized the project’s role in addressing public health, community safety, and economic concerns. Residents are encouraged to adopt animals to further ease overcrowding and support the shelter’s mission.
