An investigation is underway in Elk City, Oklahoma, after the sudden deaths of 40 to 70 horses belonging to Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) was alerted on August 23 about a possible issue with a bulk feed order linked to the deaths. The feed, which originated in Kansas, is suspected to be contaminated with Monensin, a substance safe for cattle but lethal to horses, causing rapid heart tissue necrosis.

ODAFF collected samples for analysis in two state-certified laboratories and is coordinating with the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Despite the financial and emotional loss, Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. is proceeding with the Elk City Rodeo of Champions. ODAFF has assisted with carcass disposal and reminded livestock owners to carefully review feed labels and consult veterinarians for safety concerns. The investigation continues to determine the exact cause of the deaths.
