The Massachusetts Special Commission on Xylazine has begun meetings to address the growing use of the veterinary sedative in the state’s illicit drug supply, often in combination with fentanyl. Created by a 2024 state law, the commission is co-chaired by Sen. John Velis and Rep. Mindy Domb and includes officials from health, public safety, and Veterinary agencies, plus an addiction specialist. Its mission is to study the spread of xylazine and recommend public health and safety measures.
Data show a sharp rise: xylazine appeared in 9% of Massachusetts drug samples in 2020, 35% in 2024, and in 22% of opioid-related overdose deaths in 2024. Though overdose deaths in Massachusetts fell 36% in 2024, experts warn the drug crisis remains volatile, as xylazine is resistant to standard overdose antidotes like Narcan. The commission is holding public hearings and working group meetings, but may delay its final report to March 2026.
