The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) discussed controversial proposals at its Veterinary Information Forum, including the creation of a midlevel position (MLP) and eliminating in-person requirements for telemedicine. The MLP idea involves a position overlapping veterinarian and Veterinary technician roles, potentially leading to diagnostic, treatment, and surgical responsibilities. Concerns were raised about potential risks to animal health and welfare and public health.

The proposal to relax in-person requirements for telemedicine raised issues related to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and federal regulations. The AVMA emphasized the importance of accurate information in legislative discussions and suggested tangible actions, such as leveraging Veterinary technicians and improving workplace culture, to address workforce challenges. The Veterinary profession faces changes amid workforce shortages and evolving healthcare demands.
