To prevent equine infectious diseases at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) has implemented stringent measures. All horses must be vaccinated for equine influenza and have twice-daily rectal temperature checks three days before arrival, recorded in the FEI Horse App. Upon arrival, horses undergo Veterinary inspection, including temperature checks. Any horse showing signs of illness, such as a temperature above 101°F, will be isolated and tested for equine influenza and EHV-1.

The stables are organized by discipline to manage biosecurity, with separate arrival times for eventing, dressage, and show jumping horses. During the games, caretakers must take and record horses’ temperatures twice daily, and FEI officials will conduct random checks on 5% of the horses each day. Strict regulations prohibit sharing equipment and mandate handwashing or changing gloves between handling different horses. In case of illness, horses will be quarantined, and the FEI can cancel events if an outbreak occurs. The FEI Veterinary team may extend biosecurity measures if the disease risk increases.
